How Long Do Car Batteries Last in Australia? (Heat, Not Cold)
Ask the internet how long a car battery lasts and you'll be told five to seven years. That figure comes from the northern hemisphere, and in Australia it's optimistic to the point of being misleading.
Here, three to four years is normal. In Darwin or Cairns, two to three. The reason is the thing most guides get backwards: heat destroys batteries, not cold. Winter merely exposes the damage that summer already did.

A battery that would comfortably see five years in Hobart may not see three in Townsville. Same battery, same car, same driving — different ambient temperature under the bonnet.
Why heat is the real killer
Two mechanisms, both irreversible.
Electrolyte evaporation. The sulphuric acid solution inside slowly evaporates at high temperature. In a sealed maintenance-free battery you can't top it up, so the exposed plate area shrinks permanently and capacity goes with it.
Accelerated grid corrosion. The lead grids supporting the active material corrode faster as temperature rises. Roughly speaking, the rate of chemical degradation doubles for every 10°C increase. An engine bay sitting at 60–70°C on a summer afternoon in Western Sydney is ageing that battery several times faster than a mild European climate would.
Neither process reverses when the weather cools. The capacity is simply gone.
So why do batteries always fail in winter?
Because winter is the audit, not the cause.
Cold does two things at the point of use. It slows the chemical reaction, so a battery at 0°C delivers roughly 20% less current than the same battery at 25°C. And it thickens engine oil, so the starter motor needs more current to turn the engine over.

What shortens battery life
- Short trips. Starting an engine takes a large slug of current, and it needs 20–30 minutes of driving to put it back. A daily 10-minute commute leaves the battery in permanent partial discharge, which drives sulphation — hard crystals forming on the plates that don't fully dissolve again.
- Deep discharges. Leaving the headlights or an interior light on overnight. Each full discharge measurably shortens the life of a standard flooded battery; a handful of them can halve it.
- Parasitic drain. Dashcams, alarms, trackers and phone chargers left plugged in. Individually trivial, collectively enough to flatten a battery over a week of sitting.
- Vibration. Corrugations and gravel roads shake the plates. A loose battery clamp turns ordinary driving into accelerated destruction, and it's a free fix — check yours is tight.
- Under-bonnet heat. The unavoidable one, though a heat shield (if your car came with one) is worth refitting if it's been removed.
- Long periods parked. A battery self-discharges even when disconnected, faster in heat. Cars stored over a few weeks often come back to a flat battery.
What actually extends it
- Drive it properly at least weekly. Half an hour at highway speed does more for a battery than a week of short trips.
- Keep the terminals clean and tight. Corrosion adds resistance, which makes the alternator work harder and the battery charge less completely.
- Use a maintenance charger if the car sits. For a weekend car, a caravan, a boat or anything stored between trips, a trickle or smart charger is the single most effective thing you can do. One warning that costs people real money: if your car has stop-start, it needs an EFB or AGM battery. Don't wait for symptoms — by the time you notice them the margin is already gone. But these are the signals:
- Slower cranking, especially on cold mornings or after the car has sat
- Headlights visibly dimming at idle and brightening when you rev
- Needing a jump start more than once
- A battery warning lamp, or fault codes like P0562 or U0100 appearing for no obvious reason
- Electrical oddities — windows slower, infotainment resetting

A battery is a consumable that fails without much warning, usually somewhere inconvenient. The sensible policy:
- Test annually from year two. Free at most auto parts stores.
- Test every six months from year three.
- Replace proactively before a long trip if it's past three years and testing marginal. A $250 battery in Sydney beats a $250 battery plus a tow in Coober Pedy.
- Replace on test results, not age alone. A well-treated four-year-old battery in Melbourne may be fine; a two-year-old one in Darwin may not.
Find the date code while you're under the bonnet — usually a sticker or stamped code giving month and year of manufacture. It's the only honest measure of age, and it's often a surprise on a car bought second-hand.
