Jump Starter vs Battery Charger: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Search for a "portable car battery charger" in Australia and you'll get results for two completely different products. One rescues you in a car park in ninety seconds. The other sits in your garage overnight. They are not interchangeable, and buying the wrong one is a genuinely common and frustrating mistake.
Here's the distinction in one line: a jump starter delivers a huge burst of current for a few seconds. A charger delivers a small current for many hours. Everything else follows from that.

What a jump starter actually does
A jump starter doesn't charge anything. It's a lithium battery pack that briefly supplies the enormous current a starter motor needs — several hundred amps for three to five seconds — bypassing your flat battery entirely for that moment.
Once the engine fires, the jump starter's job is finished. Your alternator takes over and recharges the battery as you drive. That's why the standard advice after any jump start is to drive for at least 30 minutes without switching off.
Good for: flat battery anywhere, no second car needed, no power point needed. Lives in the boot. Most also charge phones and many, including ours, inflate tyres.
Not good for: reviving a deeply sulphated battery, maintaining a car in storage, or fixing the underlying reason the battery went flat. It's a rescue tool, not a repair.

What a battery charger actually does
A charger connects to mains power and pushes a controlled current into the battery over hours, restoring its actual state of charge. A modern multi-stage smart charger also does things a jump starter physically cannot:
- Fully recharges a flat battery, not just enough to start
- Desulphates — some units run a reconditioning stage that can recover a battery left flat too long
- Maintains — float mode keeps a stored vehicle topped up indefinitely without overcharging
- Extends battery life — a battery kept properly charged simply lasts longer
The multi-stage part matters. A basic charger pushes current until you unplug it, which can overcharge and boil a battery dry. Not good for: getting you home. A charger needs a power point and several hours, which is no use whatsoever at Bunnings on a Saturday.
The naming confusion
Worth addressing directly, because it causes most of the wrong purchases.
Products sold as "portable car battery charger", "handheld car battery charger" or "portable battery charger for car battery" are usually jump starters, not chargers. They're portable and they involve a car battery, so the naming isn't dishonest — but they won't charge anything.
The test that settles it: does it plug into a wall? If yes, it's a charger. If it's a self-contained pack with clamps, it's a jump starter, whatever the listing calls it.

That last row matters. A battery that repeatedly goes flat has a cause: an ageing battery, a failing alternator, or a parasitic drain. Why plenty of people own both
They solve different problems, and the combined cost is less than one roadside callout plus one premature battery replacement.
- The charger lives in the garage and does preventive work — keeping the battery healthy so it lasts four years instead of two and a half.
- The jump starter lives in the boot and does emergency work — for the day the battery fails anyway, or someone leaves an interior light on.
If you can only have one and you drive the car regularly, take the jump starter — it solves the problem you'll actually be stuck with. If the car spends most of its life parked, take the charger, because it prevents the problem instead.
