How to Jump Start a Car: Step-by-Step Australian Guide
A flat battery is the single most common reason an Australian car refuses to start — and it almost never happens at a convenient moment. It's the Woolworths car park on a 38°C afternoon, or a campsite two hours from the nearest town.
The good news: jump starting a car is genuinely straightforward once you know the correct sequence. The bad news: the wrong sequence can weld a spanner to your chassis, damage an ECU worth thousands, or ignite the hydrogen gas that a lead-acid battery vents while charging.
This guide covers both methods — a portable jump starter, and traditional jump leads with a second car — plus what to do the moment the engine fires, and how to tell whether it's actually the battery at all.
First: Is it actually the battery?
Jump starting a car that doesn't have a battery problem wastes your time and tells you nothing. Run this quick triage before you touch a clamp.

Method 1: Jump starting with a portable jump starter
This is the method we'd recommend to almost every driver in 2026. A lithium jump starter lives in your boot, needs no second car, no good samaritan, and no cooperation from a stranger's electrical system. Modern units also include reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps, which removes the single biggest risk in the whole procedure.
Step by step
- Turn everything off. Ignition off, headlights off, air-con off, radio off. Every amp the jump starter delivers should be going to the starter motor, not the stereo.
- Check the jump starter has charge. Most units show a percentage or LED bar. Below about 50% you may not have enough grunt for a cold diesel. This is exactly why a jump starter needs topping up every few months — see our jump starter maintenance guide.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) battery terminal. It's the one marked with a plus symbol, usually under a red plastic cover, and it's physically slightly larger than the negative post.
- Connect the black clamp to the negative (−) terminal, or to a clean, unpainted metal earth point on the engine block or chassis. On a unit with spark-proof clamps either is safe; the earth point is still the gold-standard habit.
- Wait for the green light. Most jump starters won't arm until they detect a correct, complete connection. If you get a red light or an alarm, you've reversed the clamps or one isn't biting properly onto clean metal.
- Turn the key. Crank for a maximum of five seconds. If it doesn't fire, stop, wait 30 seconds, and try again.
- Once running, remove the black clamp first, then the red. Always the reverse of how they went on.
If the engine still won't turn over after three or four attempts, stop cranking. You're now just draining the jump starter and heating the starter motor. Does your jump starter have enough grunt?
This is where most people come unstuck. Marketing loves a big "peak amps" number, but peak amps is a momentary figure that has very little to do with whether your 3.0L diesel will actually turn over.

Method 2: Jump starting with jump leads and a second car
The classic method. It works, it's free, and it's also where nearly every jump starting injury and electrical fault originates — because the order of connection genuinely matters.
Why the order matters: a charging lead-acid battery vents hydrogen gas. Hydrogen ignites at a 4% concentration in air. The final clamp you connect is the one that makes the spark. So the final clamp must never go anywhere near the battery.
The correct sequence
- Park the donor car close but not touching. Nose to nose or side by side, close enough for the leads to reach comfortably. The two vehicles must not be in metal-to-metal contact.
- Both engines off. Both handbrakes on. Both in Park or neutral. Remove the keys if you can.
- Red clamp → positive (+) terminal of the FLAT battery.
- Red clamp (other end) → positive (+) terminal of the GOOD battery.
- Black clamp → negative (−) terminal of the GOOD battery.
- Black clamp (other end) → bare, unpainted metal on the FLAT car's engine block or chassis. An engine mounting bolt or a strut tower bolt is ideal. Not the flat battery's negative terminal. This is the step almost everyone gets wrong.
- Start the donor car. Let it idle for three to five minutes to put some surface charge into the flat battery.
- Start the flat car. Five seconds maximum per attempt.
- Disconnect in exact reverse order: black off the earth point, black off the good battery, red off the good battery, red off the flat battery.
At no point should the two clamps on the same lead touch each other, or touch any metal, while the other end is connected. That's a dead short across a battery capable of delivering several hundred amps.
A quick note on lead quality: thin, cheap leads with narrow gauge wire and weak clamps are a genuine cause of failed jump starts. They simply can't carry enough current, and they get hot doing it. What to do the moment it starts
Getting the engine running is only half the job. The battery is still nearly empty, and your alternator is now doing the work.
- Don't switch the engine off. Not to move the car, not to close the bonnet properly, not for anything. If you stop it, you may well be back where you started.
- Drive for at least 30 minutes. Ideally at highway speed, where the alternator spins fast enough to deliver a meaningful charge. Ten minutes of stop-start suburban driving will not recharge a flat battery.
- Keep the electrical load low. Air-con, demister, heated seats and headlights all compete with the battery for alternator output.
- Get the battery and charging system tested. Most auto parts stores in Australia will do this free. A battery that went flat once will very likely go flat again.
Worth knowing: an alternator is designed to maintain a charged battery, not to resurrect a deeply discharged one. Repeatedly asking it to do that will shorten the alternator's life too. Jump starting a car on your own
If there's no second car and no jump starter, your options narrow considerably.
- Portable jump starter — the only genuinely reliable solo method, which is precisely the argument for keeping one in the boot.
- Push starting — only possible in a manual, and only with a battery that has some charge left (enough to run the fuel pump and ECU). It will not work in an automatic, and it will not work on a completely dead battery. We explain why in how to jump start an automatic car.

When you should NOT jump start
Stop and call a professional if any of the following apply:
- The battery case is swollen, cracked, or leaking. A damaged battery can rupture under charge. Battery acid causes serious chemical burns.
- You can smell rotten eggs. That sulphur smell means the battery is venting hydrogen sulphide — it's overheating internally and it is not safe to charge.
- The battery is frozen. Rare in most of Australia, but real in alpine areas and on inland winter mornings. Charging a frozen battery can cause it to burst.
- It's an EV's main traction battery. Never attempt this. The 12V accessory battery in an EV can usually be jumped, but the high-voltage pack absolutely cannot.
- The vehicle is a hybrid and you're unsure which battery is which. Check the owner's manual first — hybrids have specific jump points and a specific procedure.
Common mistakes
- Connecting the final black clamp to the flat battery's negative terminal. The most common error, and the one with the most serious consequences.
- Reversing the polarity. Red to negative will blow fuses and can damage the ECU on both vehicles. Modern jump starters protect against this; jump leads do not.
- Cranking for too long. More than 5–10 seconds continuously overheats the starter motor.
- Revving the donor car hard. Idle is fine. Holding 3000rpm doesn't help and puts unnecessary load on the donor's alternator.
- Switching off straight after it starts. Undoes the entire exercise.
- Ignoring the underlying cause. Batteries in Australian conditions typically last three to five years — heat is harder on them than cold. If yours is older than that, it's on borrowed time. Watch for the warning signs of a dying battery.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I leave the cars connected before starting?
Three to five minutes with the donor car idling is usually enough. For a very deeply discharged battery, ten minutes gives a better result.
Can I jump start an automatic car?
Yes. Jump starting works identically on automatics and manuals. What you can't do on an automatic is push start it — that's a different procedure entirely, and the confusion between the two trips a lot of people up.
Can a battery be too flat to jump start?
Yes. If a battery has dropped below roughly 8–9 volts or has a shorted internal cell, a standard jump won't revive it. Some jump starters have a force or override mode for this. Full detail in can a car battery be too dead to jump start.
Can jump starting damage my car?

Is it safe to jump start in the rain?
Yes. A 12V system carries no electrocution risk to you, and rain won't short a correctly connected circuit. Keep the clamps out of standing water and dry the terminals if you can, but weather is not a reason to wait.
How long does the battery need to be driven to recharge?
At least 30 minutes of continuous driving, ideally at highway speed. To fully recharge a deeply flat battery you need a mains charger and several hours.
The short version
Red to flat positive, red to good positive, black to good negative, black to bare metal on the flat car. Start the donor, wait five minutes, start the flat car, disconnect in reverse. Then drive for half an hour and get the battery tested.
