U0100: Lost Communication with ECM/PCM
U0100 sounds like the most expensive sentence a scanner can produce: lost communication with the engine computer. Before anyone starts pricing control modules, it's worth knowing that the module itself is the least likely suspect. Cars talk to themselves over a network, networks fail at their connectors and power supplies far more often than at their computers, and U0100 is usually a wiring story wearing a scary costume.
What U0100 actually means
Modern cars run dozens of modules on a shared network, the CAN bus, a twisted pair of wires carrying everything from throttle position to whether your door is shut. When another module, say the transmission or ABS controller, stops hearing from the engine computer, it stores U0100: Lost Communication with ECM/PCM "A". Read that carefully: the code is filed by the modules that lost contact, which means it describes a silence, not necessarily a death.
Can you keep driving?
Severity: 4 out of 5. If the car currently runs, it may keep running, but a network that drops out intermittently can stall the engine or kill throttle response without notice, and the no-start version can arrive at any time. Treat an active U0100 like the stranding risk it is.
What causes U0100 (most likely first)
- Low system voltage. The single most productive place to start. Modules brown out and fall off the network when volts sag, and a tired battery or failing alternator manufactures communication codes wholesale. - Corroded or backed-out connector pins. At the ECM or anywhere along the bus. Water ingress after creek crossings, pressure-washer enthusiasm, or simple age does it.
- Chafed or damaged CAN wiring, including the rodent-chewed harness, which is a genuine rural Australian classic; mice love soy-based insulation and warm engine bays in winter.
- Blown fuses or bad grounds feeding the ECM. A computer with no power is indistinguishable from a dead one until someone checks its supply.
- Voltage spikes from jump starting done badly, reversed leads or connections made to a running donor without care. Anything from a lit lamp with no other drama, to a dash lighting up like a Christmas tree, to stalling, no-throttle, or a car that cranks and refuses to fire. U0100 on Australian cars
Commodore body wiring and its connectors have kept auto electricians busy for two decades. Utes and 4WDs that ford water or get engine-bay pressure washes contribute the corrosion cases; touring vehicles come home from the Cape with connectors full of fine dust that turns to paste with the first humidity. Cars with hastily installed aftermarket alarms, immobilisers or head units add another cluster, because anything spliced near the bus can drag it down. Will U0100 fail rego or a roadworthy?

How to read and clear U0100
Scan every module, not just the engine, because the pattern is the diagnosis: many modules reporting lost contact with one ECM points at that ECM's power, ground or connector, while one module complaining alone points back at the complainer's own wiring. Does U0100 mean my ECM is dead?
Usually not. Voltage problems and connectors cause most cases. The ECM is the last suspect standing after supply, grounds and wiring are proven good.
Can a weak battery really cause U0100?
Yes, routinely. Modules brown out below their operating voltage and drop off the network, filing communication codes on the way down. It's the first thing to check because it's the easiest.
Can jump starting cause U0100?
Done badly, yes. Reversed leads or careless connections can spike the bus. Done correctly with a proper unit, the risk is minimal, which is an argument for owning the right gear.
Why does U0100 come and go?
Intermittent connections behave intermittently: a corroded pin makes contact on smooth roads and loses it on corrugations. Codes that set on rough roads and clear on the highway are describing their own cause.
