Yes — and the process is genuinely straightforward once you understand that your hybrid has two completely separate batteries, and that only one of them has anything to do with jump starting.
With hybrids now everywhere on Australian roads, this comes up constantly. The short version: you jump the small 12V battery exactly as you would on any petrol car. You never go anywhere near the high-voltage traction battery.

Here's the part that surprises people: a hybrid with a fully charged traction battery still won't start if the 12V is flat. Why hybrid 12V batteries fail early
Hybrid 12V batteries often have a harder life than conventional ones:
- No conventional alternator. The 12V system is fed by a DC-DC converter from the traction battery, and only while the car is powered up. A hybrid that does short trips gets less consistent 12V charging than a petrol car would.
- They're frequently smaller. Less capacity means less margin before a drain becomes a no-start.
- Constant low-level load. Smart keys, telematics and always-on modules draw current continuously.
- Boot mounting. Better for heat, but it means many owners never see the battery and have no idea how old it is.

How to jump start a hybrid
Check your owner's manual first. Hybrids vary more than petrol cars, and most manufacturers specify an exact jump point. This is the one category where the manual genuinely earns its place in the glovebox.
- Find the jump terminal, not the battery. On most hybrids with a boot-mounted 12V battery there's a dedicated positive jump post under the bonnet, usually in the fuse box under a red plastic cover marked with a plus. That's the connection point.
- Switch everything off. Vehicle off, lights, climate and accessories off.
- Red clamp to the hybrid's jump post (or the 12V battery's positive terminal if it's accessible under the bonnet).
- Red clamp to the donor's positive, or connect your jump starter.
- Black clamp to the donor's negative.
- Final black clamp to the hybrid's designated earth point — bare unpainted metal on the chassis or a marked earth stud, away from the battery.
- Press the power button as normal. You're not cranking an engine — the system boots up and the READY light comes on, often with no engine noise at all. That's success.
- Disconnect in reverse order.

A jump starter is the easier option here
Hybrid 12V batteries are small, so they need far less current than a V8 — almost any decent jump starter has ample capacity. And because a jump starter can't be connected backwards without triggering its reverse-polarity protection, it removes the risk that matters most on a car full of expensive control modules.
Can a hybrid jump start another car?
Generally no, and most manufacturers explicitly prohibit it.
The reason is the DC-DC converter. In a petrol car, a big alternator can supply substantial current to a donor circuit. In a hybrid, the 12V system is fed by a converter sized for the car's own modest needs, and asking it to deliver several hundred amps to someone else's starter motor can damage it.

- Never touch the high-voltage system. Orange cables mean 200–300V and are lethal. Servicing them requires specific training and equipment.

- Never push start a hybrid. There's no mechanical clutch path to turn the engine, and it can't work.
- Never use a 24V source. Same as any 12V car — it will destroy the electronics.
- Don't ignore repeated flat 12V batteries. Once is bad luck; twice is a failing battery or a parasitic drain.

Toyota dominates the Australian hybrid market, and there's a quirk worth knowing.
After a flat 12V battery or a jump start, Toyota and Lexus hybrids frequently light the check engine, VSC and traction control lamps together. It looks like three separate faults. It usually isn't — it's the stability system standing down because the engine computer reported a problem, and low voltage during the event is often the whole cause.
That's C1201, and it's a companion code rather than a fault in its own right. Similarly, U0100 — lost communication with the engine computer — is commonly a low-voltage artefact rather than a dead module. Both frequently clear once the 12V battery is properly charged and the codes are cleared.
