How to Jump Start a 24V Truck (And Why 12V Won't Do It)

Jump starting a 24V truck is not simply "jump starting a car, but bigger". The battery bank is wired differently, the stored energy is far higher, and the two most commonly attempted shortcuts — using a 12V source to start a 24V truck, and tapping a 24V truck to start a 12V car — both cause problems that aren't obvious until later.

How a 24V system is actually wired

Here's the thing that catches people out: there is no such thing as a 24V battery in a truck. What you have is two 12V batteries wired in series.

Series wiring means the positive terminal of Battery A connects to the negative terminal of Battery B via a short link cable. The remaining free terminals — the negative on Battery A and the positive on Battery B — become the system negative and system positive. Across those two points you measure 24V. Across either individual battery you still measure 12V.

Larger trucks often run four batteries: two pairs in series, then those pairs in parallel, giving 24V with double the capacity.

Series or parallel? Check before you touch anything

Some vehicles use two 12V batteries in parallel for a 12V system with extra capacity. Wiring them up as though they were series — or vice versa — is an expensive mistake. Ten seconds with a multimeter removes all doubt:

  • Measure across the two outermost free terminals. Around 25V means series (a 24V system). Around 12.5V means parallel (a 12V system).
  • Look at the link cable. In series it runs positive-to-negative between the batteries. In parallel it runs positive-to-positive, with a second cable negative-to-negative.

Never assume from the badge on the bonnet. Plenty of light-duty trucks and small buses are 12V, and a few 4WDs run dual-battery setups that look convincingly like a 24V bank at a glance.

Method 1: 24V truck to 24V truck

The straightforward case. The principle is identical to a 12V car jump, but the connection points are the system terminals, not whichever terminal is nearest.

  1. Both engines off, park brakes applied, chocks in if you're on any kind of grade. A truck that lurches while you're between the batteries is a serious hazard.
  2. Confirm both vehicles are 24V. Measure it, don't assume it.
  3. Identify the system positive on each truck — the free positive terminal that isn't connected to the inter-battery link cable.
  4. Red clamp to the flat truck's system positive.
  5. Red clamp to the donor truck's system positive.
  6. Black clamp to the donor truck's system negative.
  7. Black clamp to a clean, unpainted chassis point on the flat truck, well away from the batteries. A chassis rail bolt or engine mount is ideal.
  8. Start the donor and let it idle for five to ten minutes. Heavy vehicles need longer than cars — the battery bank is much larger and takes more time to accept useful surface charge.
  9. Crank the flat truck in bursts of no more than 10–15 seconds, with a full minute between attempts. Diesel starters on heavy vehicles generate serious heat.
  10. Disconnect in exact reverse order.

Cable gauge is not optional here. A 24V truck starter can draw 1000–1500A. Car jump leads will not carry that — they'll get hot, drop most of the voltage, and may melt their insulation. You want 1/0 AWG or thicker, with heavy clamps and cables rated for the current.

Method 2: A 24V-capable jump starter

The practical answer for anyone who works alone or operates remotely. Many heavy-duty jump packs are switchable between 12V and 24V modes.

Two things to get right:

  • Select 24V mode before connecting. Applying 12V to a 24V system won't damage it, but it won't start it either. Applying 24V to a 12V system will destroy it. Switch first, connect second.
  • Match the output to the engine. A pack rated for a 4.0L diesel ute will not turn over a 13-litre truck engine, whatever the peak amp figure on the box suggests. Sizing is covered in how to select a heavy duty jump starter.

Connection order is the same as above: system positive on the truck, then the pack, then earth to chassis.

Method 3: Can you jump a 24V truck from a 12V source?

Not directly, no. A 24V starter motor fed 12V will either not turn at all or turn far too slowly to fire a diesel. There's no trick that gets around it — you need roughly 24 volts to spin a 24V starter.

What you can do:

  • Charge each battery individually with a 12V charger. Disconnect the link cable, charge each 12V battery separately, reconnect. Slow, but it works and it doesn't risk anything.
  • Use two 12V donor sources wired in series. Electrically valid, and it's what a 24V jump pack does internally. In practice, improvising this at the roadside with loose batteries and mismatched leads is genuinely risky — a wiring error puts 24V somewhere it shouldn't be, and you're handling unfused high-current connections. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, don't.
  • Get a 24V pack or a second truck. The boring answer, and the right one.

Method 4: Can you use a 24V truck to jump a 12V car?

This comes up constantly, usually with a truckie trying to help a stranded motorist. The honest answer has two parts.

Across the full 24V bank: absolutely not. Twenty-four volts into a 12V system will blow fuses, cook the ECU, and potentially damage the battery and alternator. It's one of the most expensive mistakes you can make with a set of jump leads.

Across a single 12V battery in the bank: electrically possible, but not advisable. Because the bank is two 12V batteries in series, you can measure 12V across either one individually, and connecting to just that battery does supply 12V.

The problem is what it does to the truck. Drawing several hundred amps from one battery in a series pair discharges it unevenly. Once the two batteries are at different states of charge, the truck's charging system can't correct the imbalance — it charges them as a pair. The weaker one gets chronically undercharged and sulphates; the stronger one gets overcharged. You've traded someone else's flat battery for a shortened life on both of yours, and most fleet operators and manufacturers advise against it for exactly that reason.

The clean solution is a 12V jump starter in the truck. It costs less than one premium truck battery, it helps anyone you come across, and it doesn't touch your own bank at all.

What not to do

  • Don't use car jump leads on a truck. They cannot carry the current and they get dangerously hot trying.
  • Don't connect across the whole 24V bank to anything 12V. Ever.
  • Don't leave the link cable off after separating the batteries. An easy thing to forget, and the truck won't start with it missing.
  • Don't crank for more than 15 seconds. Heavy vehicle starters overheat quickly and they're not cheap.
  • Don't work between two vehicles without chocks and park brakes. Trucks roll silently and they don't stop for people.
  • Don't wear rings or a metal watch band. A 24V bank can deliver enough current to heat metal to burning temperature in seconds if you bridge a terminal.

Why 24V at all?

Worth understanding, because it explains the constraints. Doubling the voltage halves the current needed for the same power, which means thinner cable, less voltage drop over the long runs in a prime mover, and a starter motor that can turn a 13-litre diesel without needing cable the thickness of a garden hose.
