P0101: Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Range/Performance
P0101 has one of the best effort-to-outcome ratios in this entire library, because the most common cause dissolves in a $15 can of MAF cleaner. The mass airflow sensor measures every gram of air entering the engine, the computer meters fuel to match, and a sensor with a film of dust and oil on its element measures wrongly by just enough to matter.
What P0101 actually means
The computer constantly sanity-checks the MAF reading against what the throttle position, rpm and manifold pressure say should be flowing. When the MAF's number falls outside the plausible window for the conditions, it stores P0101: Mass Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance. Note the wording: not dead, not disconnected, just implausible. The sensor is talking; the computer doesn't believe it.
Can you keep driving?
Severity: 2 to 3 out of 5. Yes. The computer falls back on its other sensors and calculated models, and the car runs, usually a little rough or flat. Extended driving on bad airflow data runs the mixture off-target, which is unkind to the catalytic converter over months, so it's a this-fortnight fix rather than a today one.
What causes P0101 (most likely first)
- A contaminated sensor element. Dust that slipped past the filter, oil mist from an over-oiled aftermarket filter, general grime. Cleaning is the fix, and over-oiled washable filters are a cause worth naming twice.
- An air leak between the MAF and the throttle. A split or loose intake tube lets in air the sensor never counted, and the plausibility check fails. Companion code P0171 often rides along.
- A clogged or collapsing air filter restricting flow below what the computer expects.
- A genuinely failing sensor element, which drifts with age and eventually can't be cleaned back to accuracy.
- Wiring or connector faults, less common for the range/performance version of this code than for outright circuit codes.
Symptoms you'll notice
Hesitation, flat spots, a lumpy idle, sometimes harder starting and worse economy. On turbo diesels, sluggish response that overlaps with P0299 territory, which is why reading all stored codes together matters.
What it costs to fix in Australia
| Repair | Typical cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| MAF cleaner (DIY) | $15–25 |
| Air filter | $30–80 |
| Intake tube or clamps | $40–200 |
| New MAF sensor, fitted | $150–450 |
Sequence: clean the element with proper MAF cleaner only, never carb cleaner and never a brush, fit a fresh filter if it's due, check every clamp between the airbox and the throttle, then reassess. Buying a sensor first inverts the odds. And if a washable oiled filter is fitted, go easy on the oil at the next service; excess oil migrating onto the element is one of the most common self-inflicted versions of this code.
P0101 on Australian cars
Holden Cruze and Astra MAFs are frequent flyers locally, along with Territory and Triton units. The distinctly Australian contributor is dust: a Cruze that's done the gravel road to the farm every weekend, or any car that's been through a proper dust storm, loads its filter and its sensor element far faster than the service schedule assumes. After outback trips, this code is close to routine.
Will P0101 fail rego or a roadworthy?
Through the lamp, yes: NSW pink slip on cars over five years old, Victorian and Queensland certificates at sale. The fault itself is invisible in a physical inspection, which makes carrying it to a test purely a paperwork own-goal.
How to read and clear P0101
Read the code, then watch grams-per-second airflow in live data: a healthy reading at idle sits in a narrow expected band for your engine size and climbs smoothly with revs, and a contaminated sensor reads low and lazy. Clear after cleaning and re-test; if the code returns with identical live-data behaviour, the element has drifted beyond cleaning. The full index is in the fault code library.
P0101 FAQ
Can I clean a MAF sensor myself?
Yes, carefully. Unplug it, remove it, spray the element with dedicated MAF cleaner, let it dry completely, refit. Never touch the element and never substitute other solvents.
Will a dirty air filter cause P0101?
A badly restricted one can, and after dusty driving it's the first suspect. It's also the cheapest component in the airflow chain, so it goes early in the checks regardless.
Can an aftermarket pod or oiled filter cause this?
Yes, two ways: oil migration onto the element, and airflow characteristics the calibration never expected. If the code appeared soon after an intake change, you've likely found your cause.
MAF or vacuum leak: how do I tell?
Fuel trims. A leak shows high positive trim at idle that falls with revs; a lazy MAF skews readings across the range. The live-data page above walks through it.

A fault code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. The same code can have different causes on different vehicles, and any costs shown are typical Australian ranges only. Always have the fault confirmed by a qualified mechanic before buying parts or booking repairs.
