P0011: Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
P0011 is the code where the correct first repair is an oil change, and almost nobody believes it until it works. Variable valve timing runs on engine oil pressure through passages not much wider than a pen refill, and old, thick or low oil breaks the system before any component does. Start there. Genuinely.
What P0011 actually means
Variable valve timing lets the computer rotate the intake camshaft slightly relative to the crank, trading smooth idle at the bottom of the rev range for breathing at the top. It moves the cam with pressurised oil through a phaser, controlled by a solenoid. P0011: "A" Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance, Bank 1 means the intake cam on Bank 1 is sitting further advanced than commanded, or responding sluggishly, and the computer can't pull it back where it wants it.
Can you keep driving?
Severity: 3 out of 5. Short term, yes. The engine may idle rough, feel flat, and drink more fuel, but it will drive. The caution flag: on engines where this code precedes timing chain trouble, weeks of ignoring it can escalate into P0016 territory, which is a different budget entirely. Days to a fortnight, not months.
What causes P0011 (most likely first)
- Dirty, degraded or low engine oil. The leading cause by a distance. Sludge and varnish restrict the tiny control passages, and oil past its service life loses the viscosity the phaser needs.
- A sticking oil control solenoid. The valve that meters oil to the phaser gums up with the same deposits. Often cleanable, cheap to replace.
- A worn cam phaser. The actuator itself wears internally, typically announced by a diesel-like rattle for a second or two at cold start.
- A stretched timing chain. The wear-out scenario, where the physical relationship between crank and cam has drifted. See P0016, which usually joins the party.
- Wiring or connector faults at the solenoid.
Symptoms you'll notice
Rough or hunting idle, sluggish response low in the revs, worse economy, sometimes a rattle at start-up that fades in a second or two. Plenty of cases show nothing but the light.
What it costs to fix in Australia
| Repair | Typical cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Oil and filter change, correct grade | $80–180 |
| Oil control solenoid, fitted | $150–450 |
| Cam phaser, fitted | $600–1,500 |
| Timing chain kit, fitted | $1,200–3,000 |
The sequencing is the whole story with this code. An oil change with the exact grade the engine calls for, then two hundred kilometres, then reassess. Workshops that jump straight to phasers make good money from oil that was simply overdue. The one qualifier: use the specified viscosity, because VVT systems are calibrated to it and "close enough" isn't.
P0011 on Australian cars
Toyota's 1ZZ and 2AZ four-cylinders, in Corollas and Camrys everywhere, built the sludge-and-VVT reputation and respond to oil service more often than any parts catalogue would like. Nissan QR25 X-Trails follow. Holden Cruze 1.8s and Hyundai and Kia Theta engines add the timing-component dimension, where this code deserves faster attention. Extended oil intervals in stop-start city driving, common in every Australian capital, are the single biggest contributor across all of them.
Will P0011 fail rego or a roadworthy?
The lamp fails a NSW pink slip on cars over five years old and Victorian or Queensland certificates at sale. A rough idle bad enough to feel can attract an examiner's attention independently.
How to read and clear P0011
Read the code, then watch commanded versus actual cam angle in live data at idle and on a rev; a healthy system tracks within a couple of degrees, a lazy one trails visibly. Clear the code after the oil change and give it a week; if it stays away, the diagnosis cost you a service you needed anyway. The full index is in the fault code library.
P0011 FAQ
Can an oil change really fix P0011?
Yes, and it does so regularly. VVT is hydraulically operated, and restoring clean oil at the right viscosity is the repair for the most common cause.
What does the cold-start rattle mean?
A worn phaser losing its locked position overnight. A one-second rattle that vanishes is the early warning; a rattle that lingers means the timing components are moving up the priority list.
Is P0011 the same as P0016?
Related but distinct. P0011 says the cam is over-advanced against command; P0016 says crank and cam positions no longer agree, which points harder at chain stretch. Both together strengthen the mechanical explanation.
Will P0011 damage my engine?
Not quickly. The risk is progression: sludge that sticks a phaser is also starving a chain tensioner, and that story ends more expensively than it began.

A fault code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. The same code can have different causes on different vehicles, and any costs shown are typical Australian ranges only. Always have the fault confirmed by a qualified mechanic before buying parts or booking repairs.
